Route plan A

We will leave our launch point at Telegraph Cove and head along the Ten-Mile Pt coastline. Once we reach Cadboro Pt we will head across Baynes Channel to the top end of the Chatham Islands. We will head east and noddle the Chatham Islands shoreline. We can then explore the small islets in and around Chatham Island and Griffin and Alpha Islands before crossing over to the east side of Discovery Island. We will noodle the east side of Discovery Isl. before heading into Rudin Bay for lunch. After lunch we will head west along the shoreline of Discovery Island and up the gap between Discovery Island and the Chathams. We will head up the channel between the Chatham's before reaching Stormtide Island. From Stormtide we will cross Baynes Channel again and then make our way back to Telegraph Cove.

We can debrief the paddle with refreshments at the Moka House in Cadboro Bay village.

This paddle will feature two crossings of Baynes Channel which can feature strong to moderate currents and a confused sea state. You should be a strong level 1 paddler to take part in this paddle. As we move into the fall paddling season the air and water temperatures are cooler. Appropriate immersion gear is expected to be worn on this paddle. It is also recommended to have a separate pull-over jacket that can be worn while on shore for lunch.

Route plan B

If weather conditions warrant- we can look at a couple of Plan B options: one heading north to Cormorant Pt or we could mope the paddle launch to Cadboro Bay for a paddle in the Oak Bay area.

Safety reminders

Always dress for the possibility of immersion and please bring a drybag containing a spare change of clothes. Please bring a lunch or snacks and sufficient beverage to keep you hydrated, as well as a thermos of something warm. Your paddle leader will introduce the plan and make sure everyone is comfortable with the requirements. Please stay off the water until the group is ready. If you have a VHF radio please bring it with you.
